Thanks Pops!!

We recently had a most excellent visitor for a week-long stay: Chuck's dad!

Pops came up to help Chuck with our backyard patio project. We (meaning my hard-working husband and various good friends and family members, NOT me) started our backyard renovations about a year ago, beginning with putting in a sprinkler system and fire pit and laying sod. We left a large area of dirt just off our existing patio with the intention of extending it out a bit at some point - and that point was last week!

The first job was to dig a whole bunch o' dirt out, which Chuck, Clyde, and Will readily took care of.

Isn't it hilarious how little boys idolize and imitate their dads? Clyde insisted on being out there with his little red shovel the whole time Chuck was working. Plus Clyde kept professing the most cheesy sentiments - "Wow Dad, we are working hard to get the job done!" "Let's go, Dad, we have a lot of digging to do . . . to get the job done!" Oh, thank you Disney Playhouse for instilling such an admirable work ethic in my child.

Pops arrived on the scene and the work progressed quickly.

Layer of . . . sand? Can you tell I mostly tried to stay out of the way and therefore know precious little about the whole process? There weren't any complaints, though, since I spent one afternoon making banana bread for the hungry laborers :).

Clyde and Will were a great help in shoveling the extra sand out of Grandpa's truck!

Clyde also went hands on when it was time to lay the tiles and pound them in with the mallet.

Will preferred to just walk around and double-check the work quality :).

After all the tile was laid, yay!

We're sooo excited to have all the extra space back there now.

All finished! Chuck and Pops did such a great job.

Thanks to their efficiency, Chuck and Pops had a couple free days at the end of Pops' visit, so they packed up Clyde and headed out for an all-day hunting trip. It turned out to be more of a nature drive/walk, but they still reported having a great time - Clyde especially!! We also fit in some Trivial Pursuit, a trip to Linder Farms, watching the BSU game, a temple trip for Chuck and myself while Pops baby-sat Clyde and Will, and some car repairs.

Thanks for visiting us and helping out so much while you were here Pops! Sorry if we tired you out a bit :).

Video evidence

Well, I o
we a special someone a blog post but (luckily for y'all) I'm tooooo tired for a long/photo-heavy recap of recent events (although such posts are definitely forthcoming) so instead I'm opting to back up my claims that Will is the cutest two-and-a-half year old since . . . well, Clyde :).

First off, Will's 'i love you'. I shamelessly drilled this one into Will's head; I figure his speech therapist can worry about basic communication needs and I'll work with him on words and phrases that will most benefit ME.

Secondly, a week or so ago during the Boise State football game, Will thought it was hilarious to grab various vegetables off the table and feed them to Chuck - who dutifully kept consuming them (like a carrot, then a big bite of celery, then some broccoli, and so on). I had just grabbed the camera when Will apparently realized that his poor daddy had nothing to flavor the bland veggies and brought him some ranch . . . an entire spoonful, in fact :).

And there you have it; he's flippin' adorable!

Reunited...

and it felt SO good :). After our fun weekend with the Smith family, we were able to hang around Utah for a couple extra days to visit some more friends and family, starting with Chuck's younger sister Amanda and her husband Steve.

Cute Amanda! It was fun to stop by and see their new digs for a while (before my kids' meltdowns indicated it was time to go!).

Uncle Steve! I had given Clyde the camera to amuse him for a bit and he helpfully took these few pictures since I forgot to take any while we were there.

Silly Will reading the new Thomas book Grandpa Izatt hooked him up with on our stop in Elko earlier in the weekend.

We then made our way to Sam and Terri's house to play for a couple of days - thanks again for the delicious food and most excellent hospitality guys!!
We were introduced to Chick-fil-A (which I can now pronounce correctly!).

The food definitely took a backseat to just watching Bailey. She is sooooo cute!!

Will had a good time!

Uncle Sam made sure that the boys got their traditional rides on his scooter - here's Clyde's turn.

There was also quite a bit of Nintendo played as new generations were introduced to the magic of old-school gaming systems.

Bailey seemed like a natural :).

Sam had big plans for a fun hike while we were there, but unfortunately it kept getting rained out, so we settled for a bit of a hike around their neighborhood.

Bailey had a pretty sweet set-up for our adventure!

As did Will. Chuck found that stick for him, and he totally used it was a 'walking' stick from the stroller - cute boy!

Unky Quinn helping Clyde soar to new heights :).

Goofy boys!

The day we left, we were sooo excited to be able to visit the Littlewoods.
McKenzie and Clyde! Notice how Kenzie adorably smiles when she sees the camera and then look at my kid, who apparently does not enunciate 'cheeeese' correctly if that's the shape his mouth is making :).

They were so happy to see each other and play for a couple of hours.

Paislee has grown up SO much since we saw her last, what a doll!

Chuck and Paislee.

We decided spur-of-the-moment to see if we could drop by and visit McKay at work; it was super fun to see his job site and visit for a quick minute.

Lynndi, Kenzie, Clyde, and me! It was so hard to say good-bye to Lynndi again, but definitely worth it to be able to visit.

Aaaand thanks to Chuck's quick trigger finger, we have this seriously adorable picture of Clyde and McKenzie saying good-bye. We love you Littlewoods, can't wait to see you again!

As always, there wasn't enough time to see everyone we love (or spend enough time with the people we did see!) but I'm sure we'll be back sometime soon. Miss y'all already!

An excuse to relive the fun and laugh really hard...

So I've mentioned this game pretty often, mostly in conjunction with visits to the Smith home. Basically when you take this game and add various Bradens/Izatts/Smiths/Hugos, you get hilarious results.

The basic premise of the game is simple: each player pulls a 'who' card, a 'what' card, and a 'where' card. Each player then draws the three separately or attempts to create a cohesive drawing of what's on their cards - the 'who' doing the 'what' in the 'where.' The drawings are then passed around as everyone quietly records their guesses. We then share all of our guesses in a fit of laughter as the artist reveals the correct answer and tries to defend their (questionable) depictions. Here are a few examples from our most recent night of playing:

1. This is actually a decent one that Quinner drew: it's Dracula (the who) surfing (the what) in a forest (the where) . . . although there was a small contingency that insisted the cape was misleadingly Superman-ish :).

2. Heidi's drawings are usually pretty close to perfect (her guessing, on the other hand . . . well, she resorted to cheating off my paper that night, which is a definite sign of desperation!). This is clearly Cinderella lifting weights in New York City.

3. We're all impressed with Ben for playing with us again after his 'Hillary Clinton' was brutally mocked last time by my mom. He redeemed himself here with the Hunchback of Notre Dame playing baseball on Mount Everest - although several cheaters, er, people, wanted 'on a mountaintop' to count for Mount Everest. Sorry, dudes, Ben made it clear that it was the highest mountain! (Can you tell I got it right? Because I did).

4. So this one makes me laugh because everyone but me (and Heidi, who as I mentioned was cheating off of me) got the 'what' right - drilling oil. (The who was Einstein and the where was on a boat). I seriously thought it was digging a hole to China. Don't know why.

5. This is one of Courtney's, which established that sunglasses = Hollywood/show business/movies/etc. It also established that some people don't know what jousting is. (This is Clint Eastwood jousting on a school bus, for those of you playing along at home. . . )

6. Ah, Chuck's. This is where Heidi and I dissolved into a fit of giggles as we tried to figure out the 'dead horses' aspect. We all loved Chuck's depiction of Hollywood, since it used Courtney's 'sunglasses' idea as well as poked fun at my mom's horrible rendition a few games back (she drew nine squares side by side, sure that we would fill in HOLLYWOOD. Oh, Mom). For the record, this is Bambi mugging an old lady in Hollywood.

7. So, Gloria's makes me laugh because I was soooo close on the 'what' - my guess was Mickey Mouse picturing dead animals' bones at the zoo . . . and the answer was using x-ray vision. Reminds me of one of my mom's best quotes of the night: "Oh, if I had only put that I would have gotten a point!" Yep, Mom, that's kind of how the game works; if you put the RIGHT answer, you get a point :).

8. Well, I can't post everyone else's pictures without putting my own up too. I have absolutely NO artistic talent, so it's understandable why few people could tell it was a frog that Spiderman was dissecting and not an alien . . . a discussion about the where (a modern art museum) also led to another classic quote by Courtney: "Well, modern art is the easiest to draw." Hahaha, I love Courtney!!

Now we move on to drawings by Big Will and Grandma Pam. I love both of them dearly, but for some reason theirs are the most easily mocked - luckily they're both good sports!!

9. (Now, please ignore the blocked out areas; I had to erase where people afterwards attempted to show my mom a much simpler and clear way to draw her 'where'). Basically we were all seriously stupefied by this one - to quote Gloria, "I think I know what this is, but I can't believe they'd put it on a card. . ." Her guess was 'concentration camp'. Mine was Hiroshima. The correct answer was Miss Piggy swing dancing at a nuclear power plant. Are you kidding me?? Unless it's Chernobyl, there shouldn't be DEAD people there. Oh, Mom. Way to bring us down during an otherwise fun game :).

10. Ahhh, just give yourself a minute to take it in. Like Heidi and Courtney, your first reaction might be, "Will, are you sure you didn't mix together two different Asian countries?" In Will's defense, he didn't . . . he just (honorably) kept a card that the rest of us would have put back without a second thought: Mikhail Gorbachev (who was winning a beauty pageant on the Titanic). Now it becomes apparent that top to bottom on the left it's the Berlin Wall, Russia, and . . . a nuclear explosion. Oh, Will.

11. Now to another Grandma Pam classic and her continued obsession with dead people. Quite a few of us correctly guessed 'Wallace and Grommit' for the who, and with a little imagination I can even see how they're cloning sheep (although the second sheep has more hair and less girth) but it was much trickier to get 'in a dungeon' for the where. I believe this one is where we got the Pam classic quote "Mine will be much easier to understand once you find out what it is . . . "

12. And finally, another Will masterpiece. Will has a habit of drawing his 'who' and then helpfully adding a few small additional clues to help, which usually end up confusing everyone, leading to the best laughs of the night. My guess for this one was Robin Hood hot tubbing at the White House. The correct answer, however, was Bill Clinton swordfighting in a hot tub. How we didn't get that from the White House, LITTLE ROCK, and a dollar bill is still a mystery. Seriously, this ranks up there with Will's 'Al Gore' clues of a laptop with a cord, a unicorn/bull, and Florida.

The good news is that the gut-wrenching laughter allowed us to burn off any and all calories consumed as we ate Heidi's delicious chocolate chip cookies during the game :). Love y'all, can't wait to play again next time!!

General Conference weekend = nonstop fun (and spiritual enlightenment to boot!)

If it's General Conference weekend (which it was somewhat recently) it means it's time for a trip down to Utah to visit the Smith family, hooray!

This particular time we were able to take a little detour to Elko on our way to Utah to drop off Lee's car there - much thanks to Quinn for being our extra driver! We had a quick layover there - long enough for Clyde and Will to get some wiggles out and for Dave and Terri to treat us to dinner (thanks again!) and then it was back on the road.
Quinn and Chuck, unable to figure out Lee's CD player. I'd mock them, but I couldn't figure it out either...

We arrived safe and sound Friday night and the next morning jumped right in to Conference. I had challenged all of my Cub Scouts to watch as much as they could and take notes - so I figured I should do the same :).

As always, I resorted to handing Clyde the camera during various Conference sessions to a) keep him entertained and b) get super candid and funny angle-d shots. Here's a quick sampling:
Boys watching downstairs.

Will watching a movie, nicely framed by Clyde's fingers.

An attempt to get Reed, Gloria, and Grandma Pam; only Gloria made the cut!

That evening while the older gentlemen were at Priesthood session, the rest of us opted for a little nature walk.

Acorns!

Such cute nature walk-ers!

The walk may have been too much for this little lad... who was pushed the whole way :).

Clyde spent some quality time with Heidi trying to make the sign for her sorority. Turns out everyone DOES love a Kappa Delta girl!

I kid you not, the guys all walked in and went straight to this spot and lined up. So I indulged them and snapped a couple pictures.

We figured the girls should get a picture too! I love the 'mom bookends' :).

Aaaand Court and Heid and I stuck around for a few more pictures, naturally.

We attempted some of our infamous circle head pictures, to somewhat sub-par results. Our BFSC photogenic-ness was slightly off, even after changing photographers (the second of which nearly killed us).
Luckily when you combine the three of us, even our not-the-best pictures are still pretty amazing!

Saturday night we gathered round the Smith table for some Who What Where, and it was . . . well, epic. So epic that it deserves its own post, complete with pictures of actual drawings from the game and some hilarious direct quotes. Prepare yourselves.

Sunday brought more Conference, a few more naps, and more people!
Ben sweetly played with the little boys in the pit for a while so the rest of us could watch with fewer distractions.

Sam and Terri arrived between the morning and afternoon sessions and Will, despite having been around baby Bailey several times now, seemed to discover her anew.

He would get really close to her and then just giggle, or point in excitement. This kept startling Bailey into flailing her arms about, which would startle Will, causing him to back away quickly with a yelp. . . and then he'd slowly approach her again. It was a pretty hilarious cycle.

In preparation for Sunday dinner, the boys got the coals ready for some Dutch Oven action. They followed fire safety rules, which apparently required that four of them be out there with the fire.

Chuck, sweetly humoring my need to take many, many pictures.

Dinner out on the back patio - such good food (and company, of course!).
Reed and Bailey. Reed is honestly one of my favorite people ever.

Sam, Quinn, and Chuck hanging out after dinner and dessert - yummy cobbler!

Ben, Courtney, Bailey, Big Will, and Clyde

Big Will and Clyde cemented their friendship (dare I say best friendship?) over the weekend. Big Will played with Clyde pretty tirelessly and was rewarded with Clyde's go-to seal of approval: "Big Will, I like you." They also played a game called 'hide and come seek me' . . . Clyde often comes up with such 'original' games when we say no to the zillionth round of hide and seek :).

And just like that, Conference weekend was over. We packed up and headed to Orem to spend a couple of days with Sam and Terri (more on that later) and bid an always fond farewell to the hospitable Smith family. . .
after a couple more jumps into the Love Sac, of course!!

* P.S. A lot has been said/written/assumed/misunderstood about a particular General Conference talk, and while I have no interest in any kind of debate here, I would like to offer a link to an official statement on the matter released yesterday by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
